A Local Baker - St Andrews and A Local Baker On High (Preston) are small, family-owned artisan bakeries that produce and sell organic sourdough breads and a range of handmade cakes and savouries, all lovingly baked in our woodfired oven which dates all the way back to 1850.

The oven was originally housed in Port Melbourne where the first St Andrews baker discovered and saved it by bringing it out to St Andrews, brick by brick, and lovingly restoring it. We are proud to bake all of our breads, cakes and savouries following traditional methods in our woodfired oven. Baking in a woodfired oven imparts a unique texture and flavour and a true artisan product.

A traditional handmade organic sourdough bread is also healthy and different because of its simple ingredients - water, flour and salt - and its traditional process. The process includes resting the dough for a minimum of 6 hours from mixing to baking. This resting time also gives the bread a unique flavour and texture, and it is easy to digest because the gluten has already been broken down for you in the resting process. This is bread made the way it’s been made for thousands of years.
